There’s a belief that holds a lot of people back from AI: the idea that you need to understand how it works before you can use it.

It sounds reasonable. We generally like to understand our tools. We’re cautious about black boxes. And AI, with its neural networks and machine learning algorithms and large language models, sounds deeply technical and mysterious.

So people hold back. They think they need to take a course, read some books, understand the technology. They wait until they feel qualified.

Here’s the thing: you don’t need to understand AI to use it effectively. And waiting until you do is costing you time and opportunity.


The car analogy (cliché but true)

Every article about this topic uses the car analogy. That’s because it’s accurate.

You don’t understand how your car works. Not really. You don’t know the details of internal combustion, fuel injection, transmission mechanics, anti-lock braking systems, or the dozens of other technologies that make your car function.

You just know how to drive.

You know where to put the key (or how to press the start button). You know how the pedals work. You know the controls on the dashboard. You know what the warning lights mean. You know enough to operate the car safely and get where you’re going.

That’s all you need.

The same is true for AI. You don’t need to understand neural networks, tokenization, attention mechanisms, or training data. You need to know how to use AI to get where you’re going.

Understanding AI at a technical level is interesting but not necessary. Here’s what you actually need:

When AI can help

You need a sense of which problems AI is good at solving. Generally, that’s:

  • Tasks involving pattern recognition in large amounts of information
  • Repetitive work that follows consistent rules
  • Content generation that has examples to learn from
  • Decision support that requires synthesizing many factors

Equally important is knowing where AI isn’t the right tool:

  • Novel situations with no precedent
  • Tasks requiring genuine creativity or original thinking

AI can assist in many areas, but it’s not a universal solution. Knowing the limits is as important as knowing the capabilities.

How to evaluate AI output

AI produces outputs. You need to be able to evaluate whether those outputs are good enough for your purpose.

How neural networks function. Layers, weights, activation functions, backpropagation — interesting if you’re curious, irrelevant if you’re not.

The details of different model architectures. GPT vs. BERT vs. Claude vs. whatever comes next. Unless you’re building AI systems, these distinctions don’t matter to you.

How training works. The process by which AI learns from data is fascinating but not useful knowledge for someone using the tools.

The mathematics behind machine learning. Linear algebra, calculus, probability theory — none of this is required to click a button and get a useful result.

The technical specifications. Parameter counts, context windows, token limits — you’ll pick up what matters through use, and the rest doesn’t matter.


Why intimidation holds people back

If technical understanding isn’t required, why do so many people feel they need it?

The complexity is visible

AI is discussed in technical terms constantly. The media, the vendors, the enthusiasts — everyone talks about models and algorithms and training data. It’s easy to conclude that understanding these terms is a prerequisite.

But visibility isn’t the same as requirement. The complexity is real; the need to understand it isn’t.

Fear of looking foolish

Nobody wants to seem uninformed. If everyone’s talking about GPT-5 and you don’t know what GPT-4 was, it’s tempting to stay quiet until you’ve caught up.

This creates messaging that’s often confusing: AI is simple! But also complex! You can do it yourself! But you need our help!

Cut through it. The technology is complex; using it isn’t.

The expert interest

People who do understand AI deeply sometimes inadvertently contribute to intimidation. They discuss technical nuances because those nuances are interesting to them. They forget that most of their audience doesn’t need that level of understanding.

It’s like asking a mechanic about your car and getting a lecture on thermodynamics. Accurate, but not helpful if you just want to know why the engine light is on.


Learning through doing

The best way to learn AI isn’t study — it’s practice.

Start using AI tools for simple tasks. See what works, what doesn’t. Get a feel for the capabilities. Develop intuition through experience. (Start with the smallest AI win that could change how your team works.)

You’ll naturally learn what you need to know:

  • Which prompts work better
  • What kinds of outputs to expect
  • Where verification is needed
  • How to iterate toward better results

This practical learning is faster and more relevant than theoretical study. And it doesn’t require understanding how anything works under the hood.


The role of expertise

This isn’t to say that technical expertise doesn’t matter. It does — just not for everyone.

Someone in your organization (or your ecosystem) should understand AI more deeply:

  • To evaluate vendors and tools
  • To design integrations
  • To troubleshoot problems
  • To stay current as the technology evolves

But that someone doesn’t need to be you. If you’re a business leader, your job is to understand your business and make good decisions about where AI fits. You need enough AI literacy to make those decisions, but not enough to build the systems yourself.

Division of labor is fine. You don’t need to be your own IT department.

Open ChatGPT, Claude, or whatever tool is accessible to you. Ask it a question related to your work. See what happens. No stakes, no commitment, just exploration.

Use AI for stuff you already know well. Drafting an email. Summarizing a document. Brainstorming ideas. This gives you a baseline for evaluating the output.

Iterate and experiment

If the first result isn’t great, try again with different inputs. Learn what makes the difference. This experiential learning is worth more than any tutorial.

Ask for help in plain language

When you encounter something confusing, ask — but insist on non-technical answers. Anyone who can’t explain it simply doesn’t understand it well enough themselves.

Build gradually

As you get comfortable with basic use, expand to more complex applications. Your capability grows through use, not study.

While you wait to understand AI, others are using it.

They’re saving time. They’re improving quality. They’re developing intuitions you’re missing. They’re figuring out what works in their specific context.

Willingness to experiment. Start small. Try things. Learn from what works and what doesn’t.

Ability to evaluate outcomes. Did the AI help? Did it save time? Did it improve quality? You don’t need technical knowledge to answer these questions.

Trust in experts, with accountability. Rely on technical partners for what you don’t know. But hold them accountable for results in terms you understand.

None of this requires understanding how AI works. All of it matters more.

AI is a tool. Like any tool, you need to know how to use it, not how to build it.

The intimidation you feel isn’t a sign that you’re not ready. It’s a normal response to something new and unfamiliar.
